Full Review

The Lowes Advantage Card offers outstanding savings for those who shop at Lowe’s often.

Unlike store cards which give you rewards points only if they are returned to the store, or you spend more money, the Synchrony Bank-issued credit card offers a flat 5% discount for almost everything and a $0 annual fee. These high-value discounts make the card a compelling choice for loyal Lowe’s customers and those with a lot of home improvement spending elsewhere. They could easily transfer that to Lowe’s.

Get a 5% discount on eligible purchases. This discount applies to all items in the store but not all. This is a list of exceptions to the rule.

Interest Rate: The current APR is 26.99% Variable.

Special financing is available for purchases above $299. This is a deferred-interest offer, meaning that interest will still be calculated on the purchase. You could be charged huge interest fees if you don’t pay in full before this promotion ends.

For purchases of $2,000 and more, you can get 84 months of installment financing at a lower 7.99% APR. This option allows you to pay the purchase in fixed monthly payments (each equal to 1.56% of the initial purchase price). These payments will be added to your monthly minimum payment.

The Lowes Advantage Card: Benefits

Big discount at Lowe’s

You get a 5% discount on eligible purchases with this card from Lowe’s. This card is one of the best credit cards available for home improvement purchases. You get the discount instantly upon purchase. There’s no waiting for points to be earned.

There are limits to the purchases that qualify for discounts. For instance, the discount will not be applied if you choose to finance your purchase with an installment or special financing. You can’t combine this with other discount programs, such as military, employee, or low-price guarantees. Also, you won’t get 5% off if using a coupon. This does not apply to:

  • Gift cards
  • Extended protection plans
  • Delivery, assembly, and shipping fees.
  • Certain high-end brands.

Despite these limitations, the card still offers outstanding savings on your home improvements at Lowe’s. A similar value would be difficult to find on other cards.

Instant Sign-up bonus

The Lowes Advantage Card offers a sign-up bonus different from most credit cards. You can receive a coupon for 20% off your first purchase (maximum $100). This offer is valid through January 31, 2022.

There are some restrictions. For example, discount codes won’t apply to gift cards or certain brands. If you make a large purchase, such as a refrigerator or flooring, maxing out the offer is easy. In some cases, the instant bonus may be a reason to choose this card over other cards.

No annual charge

Lowes Advantage Card costs $0. per year. The Lowes Advantage Card has an annual fee of $0.

Lowe’s card vs Home Depot Card

The Lowes Advantage Card is incomplete without mentioning The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card. The largest name offers this card in home improvement. Home Depot’s annual sales are higher than Lowe’s, so it might be expected that its credit card will offer more perks. However, the Lowe’s Benefit Card outperforms Home Depot’s card in a head-to-head comparison.

The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card does not offer ongoing benefits like discounts or rewards. Purchases of $299 and more qualify for six months of special deferred interest financing. For certain promotions, you can also get up to 24-month returns. That’s all. The Lowes Advantage Card is so superior to the other chains that price reviews show that they are almost identical in cost and that it’s no longer a competitor.

Alternatives and drawbacks

Offers a 0% APR

Lowes Advantage Card offers you the option of either installment financing or a deferred rate of interest. However, neither of these options is a true 0% APR deal. Installment financing is subject to interest charges and can be subject to high fees if not paid in full within the time limit. These financing deals don’t offer 5% discounts on purchases. You might consider a card with a true 0% intro rate period. This will give you a break from interest and won’t surprise you with large charges if you have a balance after the promotion ends.

The Bank of America(r) Customized Cash Rewards credit card is a great choice. The intro APR period is included. You can also get 3% cashback on any category you choose from a list (home improvement and furniture are one option) and 2% cashback at wholesale clubs or grocery stores. Each quarter, you will receive up to $2,500 in rewards. All other purchases earn the card 1% cashback. You can change the category you choose up to once per month. You can also sign up for a bonus.

Methodology

NerdWallet examines credit cards to see both the qualitative and quantitative features. Quantitative features refer to those that are quantifiable in dollars and cents. These include fees, interest rates, redemption values, and cash value of benefits or perks. Qualitative features are the ones that impact how easy or hard it is for cardholders to get great value from their card.

These factors include the ease of use, simplicity of rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether the card is best suited for specific purchases or everyday use. The star ratings provide a general indicator of how each card ranks against others in its category. Still, they are not intended to be a primary consideration when choosing a credit card.
